🎸 The Story Behind Essie Country
Essie Country was created and is maintained by Gene Johns.
I grew up listening to the music my mother loved—what used to be called “Country & Western.” That music wasn’t just something playing in the background. It was part of everyday life.
I named this blog Essie Country to honor my mom and her unwavering love for real country music—the kind built on honest storytelling, steel guitar, and a sound that never tried to be anything other than what it was.
As the years went on, I watched country music change. What once defined the genre began to fade, replaced by pop and hip-hop influences that, in my opinion, pushed real country music further and further out of the spotlight.
I understand that different styles of music appeal to different audiences—and that’s fine. But real country music still matters. It deserves to be heard, and it deserves a place of its own.
That’s why I created Essie Country.
This blog is dedicated to finding and promoting the kind of country music that stays true to its roots—the kind my mom loved, and the kind I believe still represents the heart of the genre.
Since I first created Essie Country, back in March of 2024, my mom, Essie Johns, passed away on January 14, 2025.
Essie Country is now more than just a blog. It’s a tribute.
