Happy Birthday Connie Smith

To celebrate the 85th birthday of my all-time favorite country singer, Connie Smith, I want to share with you the following;

I recently self-published a country music book and I wrote about Connie twice. Below is a short piece from my book that l wrote about meeting Connie:

The Kiss

When I arrived at the outdoor theater at the Plant City, Florida, Strawberry Festival in 2009, I was surprised by the size of the crowd. Looking around at all the people who had come to see Connie Smith, I jokingly said to my wife, “Who are all these people? Connie Smith belongs to me.”

Of course, she laughed. The truth was that I had been listening to Connie Smith since I was a teenager and had accumulated 22 of her albums over the years. I suppose I felt a little possessive.

After the show, I waited in line to meet her. When I told her she was my favorite singer and that I owned 22 of her albums, she smiled, thanked me, and gave me a kiss on the cheek. Suddenly, sitting far from the stage didn’t seem so bad after all.

Looking back, I suppose I should have seen it coming. After all, Connie Smith recorded ’Til I Kissed You in 1976. It just took her 33 years to get around to giving me a kiss on the cheek.
