I recently listened to Brandi Behlen’s Fly Away With Me, and while I was listening, I was struck by how much she reminded me of Lee Ann Womack. That’s not a criticism—it’s a compliment. Lee Ann is one of my all-time favorite artists.
Even so, Brandi has her own unique and talented voice. When she sings the words “Fly Away With Me” and moves into her high register, her vocal is especially captivating. It’s my favorite moments in the song.
After listening to the song several times, I was inspired to send Brandi a message through Messenger and share my thoughts. She was kind enough to reply:
“Fly Away With Me is a crowd favorite at shows! Also, Lee Ann is one of my absolute favorites. Thank you!!”
Fly Away With Me may not be my favorite Brandi Behlen song, but it joins two other songs that Essie Country has previously selected as a Real Country Music Song of the Week—Rodeo Man and Bad Boy Good Man (my favorite Brandi Behlen song).
This week’s selection is a first for Essie Country because I corresponded with the artist before choosing the song as a Song of the Week.
To be clear, I didn’t choose Fly Away With Me because of that correspondence. I chose it on its own merits. It has a contemporary country sound without crossing into pop country, while also reminding me of the style that made Lee Ann Womack such a standout artist in the 1990s.
Most importantly, it’s simply a well-written song with an excellent and memorable vocal performance, especially when Brandi moves into her high register.
