“Wasted Day” is a great follow-up to last week’s Essie Country’s Real Country Song of the Week, “My Kind of Lonely,” and further showcases Bernie Nelson’s versatility as both a songwriter and performer.
This mid-tempo, introspective song gives you time to reflect on its message with a long instrumental break in the middle and an extended fade-out at the end. There is a lot to take in: classic country vocals, strong storytelling, and a sound that stays with you.
With its relaxed, almost “tropical” feel, “Wasted Day” creates a sense of calm while quietly delivering a lesson about making the most of your time. It even brings to mind the easygoing style of Jimmy Buffett—and that ain’t bad.
When you listen to Bernie sing “Wasted Day,” you know he didn’t have any wasted days learning how to carry a tune and tell a story. His style and skill exemplify what a real country artist—and a real country song—should sound like.
So don’t worry about what others may think when you listen to Bernie sing “Wasted Day”—you may look like you’re wasting time, but you’re actually spending it on something real: the songwriting and performance of Bernie Nelson.
And that’s what Essie Country is all about—real country music.
