Essie Country’s
Real Country Music
Song of the Week
July 12-18, 2026
Beer By a Tombstone
by Thomas Mac
Released May 31, 2024

Intro by Gene Johns
Wow, what a great song! Then again, I’ve come to expect nothing less from Thomas Mac. He is an exceptionally gifted songwriter and a talented singer.
Thomas’s song Kissin’ Bourbon was Essie Country’s second Real Country Music Song of the Week back in 2024. Since then, I’ve listened to most of the songs he has released, and I continue to be impressed by his songwriting, storytelling, and unmistakable country style.
Beer by a Tombstone draws you into its story with brilliant lyrics and genuine country storytelling. This song is one of Thomas Mac’s more emotional songs and is quite different from many of his fun, and-good-times songs. He has said he wrote it about missing his grandfather.
At nearly two minutes shorter than last week’s Song of the Week, Beer by a Tombstone is another reminder of what is missing from much of today’s mainstream country music—real-life stories told through clear, easygoing country vocals. Songs that touch your heart instead of leaving you wondering whether you’re listening to country music or pop.
Once you’ve heard it, I predict you’ll play it again. Why? Because it’s a song almost everyone can relate to, and in its own unique way, it leaves you feeling good.
Beer by a Tombstone is another outstanding addition to the growing collection of songs Essie Country is proud to share as we continue promoting the best real country music of the 21st century for fans like you.
